Simulator – Travel expenses between home and work in Luxembourg

The travel expenses between your home and your place of work can have a direct impact on the amount of tax you pay, and on your net salary.
With our simulator, you can visualise and check the amounts that will be taken into account in your Luxembourg tax return and on your monthly payslip.

How are determined Travel Expenses?

Travel expenses are calculated on the basis of an annual flat rate of 99€ per unit of distance, regardless of the mode of transport used (car, train, bus, etc.). The distance is measured in kilometres as the crow flies, i.e. in a straight line between the municipality of your main residence and your place of work.

Special calculation for non-resident taxpayers

If you are a cross-border worker residing in France, Belgium or Germany, the calculation method is specific:

  • The distance taken into account is that between the main town of your foreign municipality and the point of entry into Luxembourg territory.
  • Added to this is the distance between this point of entry into Luxembourg and your actual place of work.

For example, a resident of Metz will have their distance calculated between Metz (the main town in the municipality) and the border crossing, then between that border crossing and their workplace in Luxembourg.

Change of residence or place of work

If you move or change employers during the year, this may change the number of distance units:

  • If the distance increases, the new value is taken into account from the month of the change.
  • However, a decrease in distance during the year has no effect on the current year. It will only be applied from the following year onwards.

Frequently asked questions:

Can I deduct my train or fuel costs?

No. Only the flat rate based on the distance as the crow flies is taken into account, regardless of your mode of transport or actual costs.

Why does the distance on my payslip not match the actual distance?

The distance used is standardised and may differ from the actual road distance. In the event of an error, our simulator allows you to check it.

I am a cross-border worker: can I correct the distance taken into account?

Yes, provided you provide an exact address in your country of residence. The simulator helps you verify the correct application of the rules specific to non-resident taxpayers.

What steps should be taken if the distance is calculated incorrectly?

You can request a correction from your employer (payslip) or attach an explanation to your tax return if the distance has been incorrectly applied.
